Five for Friday

Happy ~~Friday~~ Saturday Friends!

Do you know how some weeks feel like they are NEVER going to end? Yes, that would be this week for me! Coming back from spring break is always hard, but we also had a sick dog, vet visits and I had a student fall on the playground who need stitches! #heavyheart

So I am looking forward to some down time this weekend and to yes, catch up on some much needed sleep...I am linking with with Doodle Bugs Teaching with Five for Friday.

There is nothing like a little pick me than a new tote and lunch bag from Thirty One! I love this new summer print and my husband can't believe there isn't any black in it! #mygotocolor

We are working on graphing and what better time than Easter? This week we graphed "Our Favorite Flavor Jelly Bean" and "Have You Ever Colored Easter Eggs?" Next week we will be using our self portraits to graph "Are You a Boy or a Girl?" and "What Is Your Favorite Color?" with colored hand prints. We talked about what is a graph, sorting/categorizing information and comparing quantities with more and less.

Our Dramatic Play area has turned into a Chinese Restaurant. We have added Pei Wei to go boxes, "noodles" and "rice" made from yarn, chopsticks and a wok set from Melissa and Doug toys. This has been one of their favorite centers to date!

We are working hard on phonological awareness and phonics. We are in the last quarter of school and are now moving to blending words with the majority of our students. Our go to resource is CVC Words by Learn to Play. There are a handful of littles who needs LOTS of practice with letters and sounds.

Spring is the perfect time for a Farm Unit. My littles loved exploring farms through literature and hands on literacy and math activities. What's Cookin' in Your Class?

HELLO October!!

Florida Octobers are a little different as they mean temperatures drop from the 90's! This weekend central Florida is getting a "cool" front and night temperatures drop down to 60 with daytime highs at 82! I am so excited:) YES, REALLY!!

I celebrated fall last Sunday with my sweet friend Tamara Russell from Mrs. Russell's Room and my favorite fall dessert (and now hers)! Stay tuned for the recipe and a FREEBIE at the end of the post!

For those of you who follow me, you know our district's adopted reading series is Wonders by McGraw Hill. I have organized my units and classroom with this Wonders Supplemental Unit. It includes flashcards, phonics games, vocabulary activities, study guides for a home connection and word work spelling lists. Here is a sample of what's included.

I then added my Phonics Interactive Notebook {Wonders Supplemental-Grade 1} to my word work center. It is available for Units 1 and 2 with additional units coming shortly. My kids love the twist added so they are not doing traditional style worksheets.

Next week is a review week so we will be working on reviewing using Sight Word Bingo, Quiz, Quiz, Trade and Mixed up Sentences! The topics are open ended and include Columbus, How to Carve a Pumpkin, Going Batty, my Halloween Costume, My Favorite Halloween Candy and Spider Facts.

At the Writing Center, we have used themed class journals. The kids LOVE seeing what their friends have shared before they add their writing! There is a mix of narrative, informational and opinion topics. Hope you can use this FREEBIE for your class:)

Basal Texts and a Giveaway

Do you teach with a basal reader or by standard-creating your own curriculum as you go along? I believe there are definitely pros and cons to each. The county I teach in has adopted Wonders by McGraw-Hill for our reading curriculum. Even though the content is given to us, teachers are always looking for ways to organize and supplement the series.
I have worked with my blogging buddy Tamara Russell from Mrs. Russell's Room to enhance the Wonders curriculum and to organize all of the components within the series and our classrooms! We are having giveaway with our NEWEST WONDERS PRODUCTS!

Five for Friday {8/29}

I am up for a quick breath after 2 weeks back to school! I have been EXHAUSTED!! So, I am finally linking up with Kacey over at Doodlebugs Teaching for a peek into my week:)

We have jumped into the land of Interactive notebooks this year and I have to say my kids love them! We are going to be using one for reading, one for phonics/work work aligned to our Wonders curriculum and one for math.

I have introduced my Phonics Interactive Journal {Wonders Supplemental-Grade 1-Unit 1}this week. My firsties rocked it! It amazes me that their interaction with the activity totally changes their attitude about the assignment. They loved how the "secret doors" (ie-flaps) worked. They couldn't wait to share their work!

My firsties drew and painted self portraits this week. They actually drew in pencil, traced with a black Sharpie marker for the extra POP and then painted with watercolors. We had "THE TALK" about the Sharpie markers with an "I promise..." pledge to NEVER, EVER write on anything or anyone except paper:) Did I mention the NEVER, EVER part? I think they got the message:) We finally got to labeling the pictures and will be writing about them next week. The labels can are from Lori at Teaching with Love and Laughter and it is a freebie!

We have been building our stamina in Read to Self as we get ready for our Daily 5 time. This week we worked on Read to Someone with our reading basal (Wonders). I typically let them choose between their basal reader, their poetry notebook and fluency passages. Next week we are jumping into Daily 5 Rotations! I can't wait:)

Brain Breaks were REALLY needed this week. I have such a cute, chatty class. So we used lots of Dr. Jean songs for movement and today I introduced Go Noodle! My kids enjoyed surfing in between activities today. I can't wait to try out more new brain breaks.

Have you seen the website for Engage NY? Our county (yes, here in Florida...) is using some of the math modules to support our curriculum. We just completed module 26 on place value and taught a lesson using Rekenrek bracelets and "hide zero cards". Under the 8 is the zero from the number 10. When you add 8 ones (red beads) and flip the card over, it shows the new number 18. The visual really worked for my first graders who needs a tactile activity to make the connection.
